Bridge World takes small groups along the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge's closed maintenance walkway, inside the deck truss, and up a lift to the top of the main tower, about 300 m above the sea. It is run by the bridge's operator and guided by people who worked on it.

Why it's unique

No other Japanese long-span bridge offers a public tour to the top of its tower that the research found, though not every one was checked, so the claim is made cautiously.

What you get here is the inside of the structure: the maintenance walkway within the deck, the strait directly beneath you, and the view from the tower top, with guides who built it.

Before you go

Most of the session is the walk out along the maintenance walkway inside the deck, with the strait below; anyone uneasy with heights should know that before booking.

The fee includes the Bridge Exhibition Center and the Maiko Marine Promenade, so do those first. Ages 12 to 15 must come with an adult. Groups are capped at 48, so book as soon as the season calendar opens rather than hoping for a walk-up.
