A bare 923-foot hill above the Golden Gate, with unfinished wartime tunnels below the summit and birds passing at eye level.

Why it's unique

Land runs out at the Golden Gate, and hawks that avoid flying over open water get funnelled over this hill before crossing about two miles to the city. The Parks Conservancy calls it the most prolific bird of prey migration site in the Pacific Flyway.

That wording is the operator's, and no independent comparison of counts was found, so the claim is held to the state. The geography that causes it, though, is specific to this spot.

Before you go

Go between 10am and 2pm on a fog-free day, when warm thermals lift the birds. Check the online Daily Hawk Count first. Late September and early October are the peak, with as many as 1,000 birds a day, and the migration trails on to early December.

The hill reopened in late 2025 with new paths and benches, so older pages describing a closure are out of date. The longer route goes through a tunnel off Conzelman Road, with a side tunnel opening onto the round pit of Battery 129, a wartime gun position that was never finished. The noon Hawk Talks and raptor releases are on hiatus for 2026. There is no running water, the wind is hard, and weekend parking on the one-way road is difficult.
