Goshikizuka Kofun (五色塚古墳), 194 m long, is the largest keyhole tomb in Hyogo. Kobe City says it was the first in Japan restored to its original appearance (1965 to 1975): stone-faced terraces and rows of replica haniwa instead of the usual wooded hill.
Why it's unique
Kobe City says this was the first kofun in Japan restored to its original appearance, with stone-faced terraces and rows of replica haniwa, rather than left as a wooded hill. It is also the largest keyhole tomb in Hyogo.
Most kofun are fenced, forested and off-limits; here you walk up onto the mound, and the summit looks out over the Akashi Strait and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.
Before you go

A free guidance hall, Goshikizuka Kofun-kan, opened on 18 April 2026 beside the mound, with haniwa on display and a haniwa-reconstruction activity.
