An ecotourism site inside the Trang An karst with caves, a thousand-year banyan and a large natural heronry. The heronry is reached by a separate boat trip out onto the valley water, and it only works in the last hour of daylight.
Why it's unique
Thung Nham holds a large natural heronry in a valley enclosed by karst, and Vietnamese press describes it as the largest natural bird garden in northern Vietnam. The framing of largest comes largely from the operator, so treat that as the operator's claim, but the event itself is not in dispute: in the last hour of daylight tens of thousands of wild birds return to roost in one continuous movement.
What makes it worth planning a day around is that you watch it from the water rather than from a hide or a boardwalk. The bird garden is a separate boat trip from the rest of the site, so you sit out on the valley water with the birds arriving over the top of you, which is not how bird roosts are usually presented to visitors.

Buy the boat add-on, go out about an hour before sunset, and expect to be quiet on the water.
The site now runs summer festivals and a much more commercial evening programme, so if you want birds rather than a light show, ask specifically for the vuon chim boat. Winter dusk arrives early, around 5pm, which suits a day that started at Tam Coc. Ignore the 2026 rumour that the resort had been sold for billions of dollars; the owner publicly denied it and the site is operating normally.
