A small museum on 18th Street off Castro, with changing exhibitions drawn from the society's archive.
Why it's unique
Civic and press sources describe the GLBT Historical Society Museum as the country's first standalone LGBTQ history museum, drawing on the society's archive.
The "first" comes from the city's own release and has not been disputed in anything read here. It is a small room in the neighbourhood the history happened in.
Before you go
Check before crossing town. The museum warns that visits depend on staffing, closes for a half-hour gap at 1pm, and has listed November closures for changing exhibits. The first Wednesday of the month is free, first-come only.
It is under 1,700 square feet. The city has bought 2280 Market Street as its future home, but design only starts in 2026, so this room will be the museum for a while yet.
