The only one in JapanOpen-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farm Houses

The Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farm Houses (1956), in Hattori Ryokuchi park, is, per Osaka Prefecture, the first open-air museum in Japan. Its twelve buildings include a Shirakawa-gō gasshō house, a Kagoshima raised storehouse and a Shōdoshima farm kabuki stage.

Why it's unique

Osaka Prefecture describes it as the first open-air museum in Japan, opened in 1956.

What you do is walk between farmhouses from the far north to the far south of the country in one park, and step inside them.

Before you go

Look for the Dōjima rice warehouse and the Sakai windmill, both Osaka pieces among the regional houses.

Spring and autumn events light the irori hearths.
