A fourth-floor room of boards and clocks in a Financial District library building, in use daily by members and tournament players.

Why it's unique

A chess room running continuously inside a subscription library founded in 1854 and described as the oldest chess club in the United States. Its open Tuesday tournament has run since 1972.

You can actually play here. The Tuesday Night Marathon is open to anyone with a current US Chess membership, at tables once used by world champions.

Before you go

Ask at the library's front desk for a visitor pass, which lasts 15 minutes. Free public tours of the building run at noon on Wednesdays from the lobby, though one older account says every other week, so confirm.

The Tuesday Night Marathon is seven rounds at 6:30pm, 90 minutes plus 30 seconds a move, capped at 120 players; the winter edition runs 3 November to 15 December 2026, at $100 for non-members. The monthly social is on first Fridays at 5pm. The third floor is shut for renovation until about mid December.
