Kushikatsu Daruma opened in Shinsekai in 1929 and is generally credited with kushikatsu, made cheap for the labourers of the area. It also popularised the shared-sauce no-double-dipping rule.

Why it's unique

The origin is attributed by press and guides rather than documented, so this is held at country. The chain now has many branches, but the Shinsekai main shop is the original, and that is the claim.

What you do here is eat at the first counter under its own rule: one dip in the shared sauce, and the cabbage to scoop more.

Before you go

If you need more sauce after biting, scoop it with the free cabbage, which is what the cabbage is for.

The main shop is tiny and takes no reservations; the chain has many branches, but this is the one that matters.
