Drink beer in a geisha district's theatre garden, served by geiko and maiko

Geiko at your table, no introduction needed

The only one in the stateKamishichiken Kabukai

Every summer since about the mid-1950s the Kamishichiken Kaburenjō, the dance theatre of the district that calls itself Kyoto's oldest hanamachi, opens its garden as a beer garden where geiko and maiko in matching yukata go table to table to talk with guests.

Why it's unique

It is the only way to sit with geiko and maiko without an introduction or a teahouse bill. No other Kyoto hanamachi beer garden of this kind was found; the country level was not established and other districts nationally were not checked, so the scope is held at city level.

The point is the conversation: ask them questions, which they expect. Each one who visits may hand you a senjafuda name sticker, said to bring luck.

Before you go

Ask questions; that is the point and they expect it. Each geiko or maiko who visits may hand you a senjafuda name sticker, said to bring luck. Seating is in two-hour slots from 17:30, 18:00, 18:30, 20:00 or 20:30; some nights only geiko or only maiko appear. The food is plain (edamame, dashimaki, napolitan); you are paying for the room.

A Kyoto-born resident's tip: come after dark, when the lanterns are lit, and pair it with Kitano in the afternoon. The garden has covered veranda seats, so it runs in rain.
