You walk in through a dark winding hallway with hidden speakers, take one of 49 seats, and then the lights go fully out for the length of the piece.
Why it's unique
A theatre purpose-built in 1976 so that composed sound can be moved around 49 seated people through 176 speakers set in the walls, hung from the ceiling and laid under the floor.
No other room of this kind turned up in the research, but no source tests the claim, so it is held to the country and to modest confidence.
Before you go
It is no longer one fixed show. Guest composers rotate, so look up what you are getting; for the house's own work, look for a piece by owner Dave Shaff, son of founder Stan Shaff. Each month's dates go up only about two weeks ahead, so you cannot plan far in advance. Jon Arkin plays 13 to 15 November 2026 and Merlin Coleman from 21 November to 4 December.
The age floor of 12 exists because children screamed when the lights dropped. Doors open 30 minutes before, and the lobby shows archive items including the original four-track tape machine.
