Visit the only Commonwealth war cemetery in Japan
The CWGC's only site in Japan
Yokohama War Cemetery in Hodogaya Ward holds more than 1,500 dead, chiefly Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, Indian and British, most of whom died as prisoners of war or during the Allied occupation, plus a post-1953 section of 171 Korean War casualties.
Why it's unique
It is the only site in Japan cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which is unambiguous and checkable.
Its status rests on a 1955 war graves agreement under which Japan provides the land free with automatic thirty-year renewals. It is a working place of remembrance, divided into British, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand, Indian and Pakistani, and post-war sections.
Before you go
Treat it as a place of remembrance rather than an attraction. An annual POW memorial service is held on the first Saturday of August, and ANZAC Day services on 25 April, both drawing embassy staff and a few hundred people.
It is reached by bus from JR Hodogaya to Kariba-cho. Opening hours could not be confirmed; CWGC cemeteries are normally open in daylight, so go in the middle of the day.
