Why it's unique
The International Skating Union recognises this as the official world repository for figure skating records and history. That is an institutional designation held by one place, not a marketing claim, and it is why the sport's material ends up here rather than anywhere else.
Colorado Springs holds it for the same reason it holds the Olympic museum and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame: the governing bodies of American sport clustered here through the twentieth century, and their archives followed. Note that the displays run heavily to American skaters despite the name, which is worth knowing before you go rather than discovering inside.
Before you go
Admission is around five dollars, which makes it one of the cheapest specialist museums in the city, and it is small enough to do properly in an hour rather than needing half a day.
Check the opening days before travelling; it keeps limited hours and is not a drop-in on any day of the week. Despite the name the collection is weighted towards American skaters, so go for the archive and the objects rather than expecting a global survey.
