A decommissioned carrier at Alameda Point with its hangar bay open to walk, holding aircraft and Apollo recovery exhibits.
Why it's unique
This is the aircraft carrier that recovered the Apollo 11 crew in 1969, and it recovered Apollo 12 as well.
Carrier museums exist elsewhere, so nothing is claimed for the type. The claim is for this specific ship and this specific job.
Before you go
The quarantine trailer in the hangar bay is not the Apollo 11 unit. It is serial 004, a prototype that housed the Apollo 14 crew from 9 to 12 February 1971, the last flight quarantined.
The docent-led tour costs $12 on top of admission and has a 48-inch minimum height, so check before bringing children. The site's listed closed days are inconsistent, so assume Tuesday to Thursday closed. Admission is $2 with SNAP or EBT.
