A corner bar at Castro and Market whose defining feature is what you can see through its glass, and what the street can see of you.
Why it's unique
City planners call it the first known gay bar with full-length plate glass windows, uncovered as a deliberate refusal to hide from the street. It is San Francisco Landmark 264.
The experience is sitting where patrons could not safely sit before, in the corner of Castro and Market. The sources hedge it as "first known", so the claim carries modest confidence.
Before you go
The window seat is the whole point. You are doing what patrons could not safely do before two women bought the place and uncovered the glass; sources give 1971 or 1972, and the planning report says 1972.
It is on the same block as the Castro Theatre, so it pairs with a screening.
