Order a Tommy's Margarita at the bar where it was developed

On the rocks, no salt, no orange liqueur

The only one on EarthTommy's Mexican Restaurant

A family Mexican restaurant on Geary in the Outer Richmond, with a tequila bar run by a son of the founders.

Why it's unique

A now-international recipe of 100% agave tequila, fresh lime and agave syrup, developed at this family restaurant's own bar, where you can still sit and order it.

The date is fuzzy. It evolved through the late 1980s and 1990s rather than being invented on one night, and the name came later from British bartenders. But this is the original bar, and everywhere else is a copy.

Before you go

Expect it on the rocks with no salt rim and no orange liqueur, because those are the choices that define it. Julio Bermejo still runs the drinks, and the bar's tequila club is a tiered programme of tastings where the second level involves a written exam.

A late-night plan will fail. It closes at 8:30pm and is shut on Monday and Tuesday.
