Find the three spots where the King, the Queen and the Jack all line up
Three spots, one wish, 25 minutes
Three inter-war towers stand within a few hundred metres of each other on the Kannai waterfront: the Kanagawa Prefectural Government Building (the King, 1928), the Yokohama Customs Building (the Queen, 1934) and the Port Opening Memorial Hall (the Jack, 1917). Foreign sailors in the 1930s named them after playing cards.
Why it's unique
This is a genuine local ritual with fixed physical locations. There are exactly three places where all three towers are visible at once, and the story goes that standing at each of them grants a wish.
It is the kind of thing a visitor would never find alone, because one of the three spots is a small metal plate set into the pavement on Nihon-Odori that almost everyone walks straight over.
Before you go
The three spots are Nihon-Odori boulevard directly opposite the Prefectural Government Building, marked by the metal plate in the pavement; Osanbashi Pier; and Akarenga Park beside the Red Brick Warehouse. Do them in that order and the walk is about 25 minutes end to end.
The Customs Building's own Queen's Museum is free, so you can go inside one of the three towers for nothing. It runs 10:00 to 16:00, closed 29 December to 3 January.
