A Russian Orthodox cathedral with gold domes at Geary and 26th Avenue, with the shrine inside and services daily.

Why it's unique

The relics of a 20th-century saint lie in an open golden shrine in a neighbourhood church in the fog belt, and pilgrims travel to them. People write notes for the sick to be placed under the shrine.

Clergy say no church in North America is visited as often, which could not be checked. The claim here is the narrower, supportable one, to the state.

Before you go

The cathedral says it is open all day and services run daily, so you can walk in outside the crowded Sunday liturgies at 7:30 and 9:45. Friday liturgy is in English.

This is a working church, so read its etiquette page before you go. Sources disagree on the street number, 6210 or 6219, so navigate to Geary and 26th.
