A steel wartime freighter tied up on the Embarcadero, open from the engine room to the flying bridge.

Why it's unique

A working Liberty ship that made 11 crossings to Normandy around D-Day and sailed back for the 50th anniversary in 1994. The operator calls her the last unaltered Liberty ship.

The National Park Service says two Liberties remain operational, this one and the SS John W. Brown, so she is not the last Liberty ship, and the narrower claim is the venue's own. The whole ship is open, engine room included.

Before you go

Older guides still say Pier 45. A 2020 fire pushed the ship off that pier and she is now at the north end of Pier 35. Tickets are sold at the booth on the day.

Make sure you go right down as well as up. On cruise days dockside tours are afternoon only, and the operator says it is preparing for a major maintenance period, so check the site before a special trip.
