A Sunday service in a theatre at Fort Mason where the band plays A Love Supreme and the people in the seats play along on whatever they were handed.
Why it's unique
A working African Orthodox congregation that treats John Coltrane as a saint and builds its worship around playing his music, with the congregation joining in.
The research found no other church doing this. No source states it outright as checked fact, so confidence stops short of certain.
Before you go
Old guides still send people to Fillmore Street. The church is now in the Magic Theatre, on the third floor of Landmark Building D at Fort Mason Center.
You are handed a shaker or tambourine at the door, congas and djembes are kept at the back, and visiting horn players are invited to sit in. The church lists 11am to 1pm but Mission Local says it can reach two and a half hours, so do not book lunch tight. The first Sunday of each month is given over to a meditation on A Love Supreme. Sundays are occasionally cancelled, as on 31 May and 11 October this year, so check the calendar that morning.
