Walk a 1911 harbour freight railway out across open water
The rails are still in the path
Kishamichi, about 500 m of the 1911 Rinko harbour freight railway, converted to a promenade in 1997. Two of its three bridges were built by the American Bridge Company in 1909, and the original rails are still embedded in the walkway.
Why it's unique
You are walking the actual track bed of a harbour freight line, over open water, on its original steel truss bridges. A converted port railway on its own overwater bridges with the rails left in is not something another Japanese city offers.
It connects to the Yamashita Rinkosen Promenade, the other surviving stretch of the same line, opened in 2002 on the original viaduct. Together they make a continuous walk from Sakuragicho to Harbour View Park.
Before you go
This is the best free night walk in the city. The water here is enclosed and still, so Landmark Tower and the Cosmo Clock reflect almost perfectly. Walk it after dark from Sakuragicho towards World Porters, so the skyline builds ahead of you rather than behind.
The third bridge, dating from 1906, is a Japanese-built girder to a British pattern, relocated here from elsewhere.
