Eat cendol drowned in Melaka's own palm sugar at Jonker 88

Syrup pooling at the bottom of the bowl

The only one in Melaka

A shophouse dessert counter at 88 Jalan Hang Jebat serving cendol under a heavy pour of local palm sugar, with communal tables and a curry laksa worth ordering alongside.

Why it's unique

Cendol here is made with gula Melaka, the smoky nipah and coconut palm sugar that takes its name from this state, and Jonker 88 pours it on heavily enough that a syrup layer pools at the bottom of the bowl. Three versions anchor the menu: gula Melaka, Baba cendol and durian.

The claim is a state one and the ingredient is what carries it. The sugar is named after the place, and cendol from this state is what cendol elsewhere gets measured against, so the bowl in front of you is the reference version rather than an interpretation of it.

Before you go

Order at the counter, then find a seat at the communal tables. Do not sit down first and wait, which is what most visitors do.

The Baba cendol adds red bean and attap seed and is the one the shop is actually known for. They also do a very good curry laksa, so this can be lunch and dessert in the same seat. Roughly RM4 to RM6, open from 9.30am but only until 6pm on weekdays, and later on Saturdays. Cash.
