Stand under the world's tallest indoor waterfall
40 metres, inside an airport
The HSBC Rain Vortex falls through the centre of Jewel Changi Airport, a Moshe Safdie building attached to Terminal 1. Around it is a five-storey indoor forest.
Why it's unique
At 40 metres it is the tallest indoor waterfall in the world, dropping through an oculus in a glass toroid roof and down seven storeys into a basement collection pool. The water is rainwater, harvested from the roof it falls through, which is why it runs at all in a country with no spare water.
The part people miss is that this is an airport. Not a museum with a waterfall — a working terminal building, free to enter, that happens to have the world record in its atrium. You can go and stand under it on a layover, or on a Tuesday, without a boarding pass.
Before you go
Free, and open to anyone — you do not need to be flying. The light and sound show runs on the hour in the evening and is the version worth timing for.
Best views are from the Shiseido Forest Valley walkways rather than the ground floor, and from the Canopy Bridge on level 5 which has a glass panel directly over the drop. Note the Cloud Forest at Gardens by the Bay held this record before 2019 and a lot of published material still says so.
