Why it's unique

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the drag nun order that first appeared in San Francisco on Easter Sunday 1979, run a costume contest of Jesuses and Marys in a public park every Easter.

The contest belongs to this order and this city. The Sisters have grown beyond one place, and no source tests the claim further, so it is held to the state.

Before you go

The day changes character, with children's events from 10am and the later hours much more adult, so choose your end of it. To enter, go backstage by the tennis courts when the contest is called. There is a screening first and only one person per entry goes on stage, so a group costume works against you. The 2026 winner was Renewable Energy Jesus.

Take the J or the 33, because parking is hopeless. The event has moved to other venues in bad weather.
