Why it's unique
Hoi An has upwards of 350 tailoring shops in a town of roughly 30,000 people, working bespoke garments to a 24 to 48 hour turnaround.
The density is the record, not any one shop. It descends from the town's centuries as a trading port with Chinese, Japanese and European textile links, and there is nowhere else where the trade is concentrated at anything like this ratio.
What you are buying is speed and choice at a scale that only exists because 350 businesses are competing on one street grid.
Before you go
Allow two fittings and therefore two days, whatever the shop promises. A rushed job goes wrong at the first fitting and gets fixed at the second, and a 24 hour turnaround skips the part that makes it fit.
Bring a photograph of exactly what you want, or better, a garment to copy. Describing it does not work.
Agree the fabric by touching it rather than from a swatch book, and settle in advance whether the price includes a second alteration. That is where the disputes are.
