Join the dawn shift around the lake before the city wakes

Hoan Kiem Lake

The paved circuit around the city's central lake between roughly half past five and half past seven in the morning, in continuous use by several hundred people doing entirely different things a few metres apart.

Why it's unique

For about ninety minutes before the traffic starts, the path around the central lake becomes the city's communal outdoor gym: tai chi groups, badminton without nets, dance crews with speakers, and a great many people walking very fast in formation. Then it empties and the lake is just a lake again.

It is a daily resident ritual rather than a scheduled event, and it is the local-ritual limb of the rubric rather than a claim that nowhere else does morning exercise. What is specific here is the density and the hard stop.

Before you go

The window is real and narrow. By half past seven it is finished, and arriving at eight tells you nothing about why anyone recommended it.

The north-east side near the temple bridge is where the tai chi groups gather; the south end has the dance and aerobics crews with the speakers. Nobody minds you joining the back of a group and several will actively wave you in, which is the entire point of going. Coffee carts set up around the edges from about six.
