Why it's unique
Founders' Plaza is a purpose-built public observation area inside the airport's grounds, with mounted binoculars and a speaker system broadcasting the live FAA tower frequency across the whole plaza.
Plenty of airports can be watched from a fence or a car park. A public plaza wired for the tower feed, so that you hear the clearance and then watch the aircraft do it, is a different thing and is what makes this worth planning around.
Before you go
Open 7am to 7pm daily and free. Which runways are active depends on the wind, so some days are continuous and others are quiet; the north-facing side is busy most of the time.
Bring a handheld radio if you want approach and ground as well as the tower. There are tables and no food, so bring that too. It is inside airport grounds but is not airside, and needs no ticket.
