Doroyaki is a loose dashi-batter okonomiyaki baked on a 230°C griddle and eaten with a spoon, each spoonful dipped in dashi. It was created at Nanpū, founded in Himeji in 1986, whose head shop moved near the JR Himeji east exit in 2024.
Why it's unique
Doroyaki was invented at Nanpū in Himeji when a regular's child asked for takoyaki and there was no takoyaki plate. It began as an off-menu item for children, and went on the menu once vegetables were added. The origin is sourced to local press quoting the founder.
Nanpū now has branches across Kansai and beyond, so the dish itself repeats. The record is the original shop, which is in Himeji.
Before you go
Dip each spoonful in the dashi. Order Himeji champon alongside, the local yakisoba-plus-yaki-udon mix.
The head shop relocated in 2024, so older directions to it are out of date.
