Butterflies by day, fireflies by night
A few weeks each spring when butterflies emerge along the forest roads at Cuc Phuong in numbers thick enough to blur the track, with a firefly season running on the same nights.
Why it's unique
Mass butterfly emergence is not unique to Vietnam. What is unusual here is that it is a signposted, managed season inside a national park, on a road you can walk or cycle, in the same weeks and from the same accommodation as a firefly season after dark.
That pairing is the reason to come. You spend mid-morning on the road between headquarters and the park centre with butterflies lifting off the track in front of you, and the same night you are out in the dark with fireflies in the trees, because you are staying inside the park rather than driving back to a hotel.
Before you go
Do not book on last year's dates. The park director told Thanh Nien that both seasons run roughly April to June and that in 2026 both arrived two to three weeks early, which he attributed to ecosystem shifts rather than chance. Ring the park before you commit to dates.
Butterflies are best mid-morning on the road between headquarters and the park centre, on foot or by bicycle, not from inside a car. Fireflies need you to be staying inside the park after dark, which is exactly why day-trippers never see them. The season is now well publicised domestically and April weekends are busy; midweek is materially quieter.
