Buy thirty-five kinds of nyonya kuih from a house in Tengkera
Thirty-five kuih from a front room
A family house at 72 Jalan Tengkera Pantai 2C, about 3 km north-west of Jonker, selling more than thirty-five kinds of hand-made nyonya kuih over the counter. Takeaway only, and there is nowhere to sit.
Why it's unique
Baba Charlie is a Peranakan household in a residential lane off Jalan Tengkera that makes more than thirty-five varieties of nyonya kuih by hand: ondeh-ondeh, kuih koci, ang ku kueh, pulut tekan, kuih kosui, nyonya chang. The recipes went grandmother to mother to son. It started as a door-to-door round and a night-market stall in 1988 and has never become a shop.
Nyonya kuih is made across the Straits, so the claim is about breadth and setting rather than the cakes existing: thirty-five kinds under one roof, takeaway only, out of a family front room. You buy a mixed box from a house, which is a different transaction from buying two kinds from a bakery counter.
Before you go
Takeaway only, so the correct move is to buy a mixed box and eat it on the seawall.
It opens 10am to 3pm and is closed on Thursdays, and the popular kuih go first, so mid-morning is the window. The ondeh-ondeh burst with liquid palm sugar and do not travel well past a couple of hours in the heat, so eat those first and take the ang ku kueh home. Cash.
