A ferry from Pier 33 to the island, then a self-paced walk through the cellhouse with the audio tour. The Night Tour leaves on the last boat of the day.

Why it's unique

A former federal penitentiary on its own island in the bay, where you walk the cell blocks to an audio tour narrated by the people who were held and worked there.

Island prisons exist abroad, so the claim stops at the country. No other federal island prison in the United States turned up in this research as something you can walk through.

Before you go

The island is closed from 26 October to 18 November 2026 while ferry dock pilings are replaced, and is expected back on 19 November, weather permitting. It also closed for nine days in January and again in April this year, so avoid a tight itinerary.

The Night Tour can open areas the day crowds never see, possibly including the hospital and solitary cells, though what opens varies. Night and Behind the Scenes tours do not run on Sundays or Mondays. The Agave Trail around the southern edge opens only outside the seabird nesting season, realistically 19 November to mid January this year.

Tickets go on sale up to 90 days ahead and can sell out a month or more ahead in summer and near holidays. Alcatraz City Cruises is the only operator.
